Water and flood damage: listing damaged contents

With water damage, items are usually still there, just ruined. That makes documentation easier, as long as you document before you throw anything away.

Homeowners vs flood insurance

Sudden water damage from inside (a burst pipe, a failed water heater) is typically covered by homeowners or renters policies. Rising surface water is "flood" and generally needs a separate flood policy (e.g. NFIP). NFIP contents coverage pays actual cash value and has its own limits and exclusions, especially for basements.

Build the itemized list

Use a room checklist so you don't forget smaller items in damaged drawers and cabinets, and record age and replacement cost for each.

Turn this list into a claim-ready inventory

LossList walks you room by room, fills in typical replacement costs, calculates depreciation, and exports the Excel spreadsheet and PDF your adjuster asks for. Free to start — your data never leaves your device.
